Michael Drake excels at entrepreneurship, expands local startup

I had a great conversation with Memphis entrepreneur Michael Drake at the Lipscomb and Pitts Breakfast Club program a couple weeks ago and I was encouraged to learn that the company he founded a few years ago – masterIT – is experiencing tremendous success.

Despite the sluggish economy and worries from the small business community about everything from making payroll to posting profits, Drake’s company is flourishing.

In fact, the company posted a remarkable increase in revenue last year - 55 percent above what the company did in 2010 – and because of that dramatic growth spurt the firm is moving to a new location.

Beginning Feb. 20, masterIT will be at 57 Germantown Court, Suite 201. Here’s what Drake had to say about the expansion, which he attributed to a focused effort on the local market and focus on service tailored to the client:

“Our purpose is to help small and medium businesses optimize technology to be more successful. We have been listening to our clients and the market and have been working diligently to make it extremely easy for clients to engage our services by offering no minimum specifications or long-term contracts.”

And in addition to growth in masterIT revenue, Drake increased his workforce by adding eight engineers.

This is the kind of win Memphis needs.

A local entrepreneur starts a company with a small staff and despite the obvious challenges facing small business owners across the country, he makes it work. And he creates work for others by generating jobs, which in turn promotes economic development in our community.

Kudos to Drake and his team – here’s hoping for their continued success.
