Musical entrepreneurship

If you’re a local musician – or if you know someone who is – then clear your calendar for a great program tomorrow (April 14)¬†afternoon sponsored by the Memphis Music Foundation.

The “Merchandise and Branding Workshop” will run from 1 to 3 p.m. at the MMF site Downtown at 431 S. Main, Suite 201.

Moderator Larry Robinson will coordinate the panel discussion that will include participants Bruce Fitzhugh of Music City Networks; John Sylvester, co-founder of Sache Clothing and Design; Joel Halpern, creative director for ABC24/CW30; and entrepreneur Fred Spikner.

Here’s a promo from the MMF:

Join us this weekend for a workshop on merchandising and branding. We have put together a great panel of experienced branding professionals to discuss branding basics, graphic design, digital sales, tour merch needs and general image strategies that fit your sound. Feel free to bring your material for review and direct consultation. Their combined clients lists have included Atlantic Records, Epic Records, MTV Networks, Paramore, Toby Keith, and Lady Antebellum. Some conversation topics will include what branding is and how it relates to bands, how to use social media to maximize the power of the brand, and when to consider a marketing firm or graphic designer, to name a few.

The great thing about this forum – well, there are lots of great things about it, but ONE of the fantastic components is that this workshop is designed to help local musicians take better control of their careers. By approaching music from an entrepreneurial as well as an artistic perspective, musicians can build solid, financially sustainable enterprises while creating something they love.

This is a wonderful resource for local musicians and a program that Memphis music lovers should embrace.

There’s no cost to attend, but the folks coordinating the workshop would like an idea of how many to expect so please register if you’d like to attend. And try to arrive 15 or 20 minutes early to get signed in, find a seat, etc.
