A longtime Memphis rug business recently invested in a renovation, adding a new showroom to better display its large inventory.
Fred Remmers Rug Cleaners & Oriental Rug Galleryalways had rugs for sale, said owner Mehdi Abesi, but the main focus, until recently, was on cleaning.
Founded in 1881, Remmers moved to its current location at Central and Cooper in 1983. The business was passed down in the Remmers family until three years ago, when Abesi, who had his own Oriental rug business, bought it and combined the two.
In June 2012, construction began on the 11,000-square-foot building to remove an aging metal front and replace it with a taller, friendlier facade. Inside, a reception area, a couple offices and a small showroom were ripped out leaving 4,500 square feet of showroom space. The showroom ceiling was also raised from eight to 14 feet.
Abesi said that previously customers would see rugs in the showroom and assume that they were there for cleaning.
