Launch has left the building…almost

It’s official: LaunchYourCity is heading east, leaving its original Downtown home for a fancy new Midtown address.

LaunchYourCity, the organization devoted to promoting startups and nurturing entrepreneurship that from its inception has been housed at the EmergeMemphis converted warehouse at 516 Tennessee, has finalized plans to move to new space at 66 S. Cooper inside the Playhouse On The Square complex, leaders confirmed on Friday.

The shift from the organization’s Downtown location to its new home in Midtown should play well into the continuing revitalization of Overton Square, said LYC chief brand officer Elizabeth Lemmonds. Renovations on the 2,700-square-foot space will begin on Monday and move-in is expected to be by early March.

“We’ve been at Emerge since our inception and have been thrilled to be part of downtown Memphis’ energy and development,” Lemmonds said.

The announcement arrived one day after board members at EmergeMemphis decided to conduct a search for a permanent executive director to replace Launch Your City co-president Eric Mathews, who had held the interim spot at Emerge for the last year. Mathews’scontract with Emerge expires at midnight on Friday.

The new site will be on the fourth floor of the Playhouse building with about half taken up by the LYCLaunchpad. A number of smaller offices will be included in the open floor plan, Lemmonds said, including space for Seed Hatchery participants and areas where LYC will offer its educational and professional programming.

I’ll have updates as they’re available. Until then, to learn more about LYC, visit launchyourcity.com.
